Hi everyone! It’s Imani! Hope you are all safe! Happy black history month!
Fun fact about me: I have wanted to work in the medical field when I grew up since 2nd grade. I thought “Wow. These people are some of many making a difference. They are helping so many people and changing the world. They make this world a safer place”. I wanted to be one of these people who make a difference and I thought the medical field was the profession for me. I loved to watch Doc Mc. Stuffins and play with the toys pretending to fix and bandage my toys growing up. My dad often shows me videos and facts about pharmaceutical scientists. When he showed me a video about the COVID-19 virus vaccination, it changed my whole perspective on the topic. As I learned that being a scientist that studies medicine wasn’t easy, I began to lose a little bit of hope. Until I saw a girl like me living out my dream in a video dad had showed me.
Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett is the person who developed the corona virus vaccination along with her colleagues at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 2014 at University of North Carolina at Chapel hill. From the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, she obtained a B.S.(Bachelor of Science) in Biological Sciences. I think it is important for me to highlight her for my black history month blog because during this pandemic, she is giving people hope that this whole situation will be over soon and that black girls can also achieve anything and go far.
She taught me that I can do whatever I put my mind to. If she can, why can’t I? That is the same message I hope I send when children see me, see my work, and read my books. I want kids to see another kid like them achieving great things and going places. That is the same message that Kizzmekia Corbett portrayed.

Hi Imani, thanks for highlighting Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett on your blog for the Black History Month recognition. So many inspiring and outstanding Black people are not getting the recognition they deserve, so I admire you for highlighting such focus. STEM is also one of my great interest for black parents to have their children focus on. You are certainly going places Imani. Keep inspiring other children Imani. You’re doing an amazing thing.
